KAMAL HAASAN’S ‘THUG LIFE’ KARNATAKA BAN UNDER FIRE! Supreme Court to Hear Plea on June 13—Will the Film Finally Get Released?

Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s much-awaited film Thug Life landed in the middle of a big controversy after a statement made by the senior actor at the audio launch of the film. Haasan said that the “Kannada language originated from Tamil,” which evoked outrage across Karnataka on a large scale. Various linguistic groups and cultural associations labeled the statement as “insulting” and started protesting the release of the film in the state.

The uproar gained such intensity that Thug Life was banned from screening in Karnataka. The Karnataka High Court intervened and suggested that Kamal Haasan issue a public apology to calm the situation. However, Haasan stood firm, clarifying that his comment was a result of “linguistic confusion” and not meant to demean any language. In a written statement to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, he emphasized his respect for all Indian languages and cultures.

Matter Comes to Supreme Court
With no solution in the offing, a citizen of Bangalore, Mahesh Reddy, approached the Supreme Court with a petition demanding clarity on the release of the film and action against Haasan’s comments. At first, the top court asked the petitioner why he had avoided the Karnataka High Court. But after listening to elaborate arguments, the Supreme Court consented to consider the case, fixing the date of hearing for June 13.

Political and Public Responses
While the controversy continues to rage in Karnataka, the Tamil Nadu government has openly supported the film and its creators. In a show of solidarity, the government has even permitted special early morning screenings of Thug Life, reflecting the region’s excitement and anticipation for the movie. This has added a political dimension to the controversy, highlighting regional sensitivities over language and cultural pride.

A Legendary Collaboration After 37 Years
Thug Life, a gangster drama, is a gritty tale of angst with Silambarasan T.R. and Trisha in lead roles, along with other fabulous cast members, including Nassar, Sanya Malhotra, and Ali Fazal. The Kamal Haasan Mani Ratnam duo returns, a legendary combination nearly four decades after their last association, which was the 1987 classic Nayakan.
