A conversation about ghazals on Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 18 turned into a thoughtful discussion about poetry, music and creativity. During an interaction with contestant Anuj Bhatnakar, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan spoke about legendary ghazal singer Jagjit Singh and shared his admiration for his work.
The conversation began when Anuj Bhatnakar spoke about his habit of listening to ghazals after a stressful day at work. He described himself as a fan of Jagjit Singh and even recited a ghazal during the interaction. He then asked Mr. Amitabh Bachchan which Jagjit Singh composition he liked the most.
Mr. Amitabh Bachchan replied, “Bohot saari ghazal hum sunte rehte hain, kabhi-kabhi sangeet wagairah hota hai. Ek unki hai, ‘Aahista Aahista’ wali, woh bohot sundar hai. Woh ek mujhe bohot pasand hai.”
Anuj then asked the veteran actor whether he had any special memories of Jagjit Singh. He also pointed out that both Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and his father, legendary poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, had worked with the singer over the years.
Speaking about his meetings with Jagjit Singh and other creative artists, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan explained how writers and singers often understand each other through their work.
He shared, “Sir, woh kya hain ki, kai mulaqatein hoti thi, aur jo log creative kaam karte hain, aur jo likhne ka kaam karte hain, jo lekhan karte hain aur uska uchcharan karte hain, toh unmein kahin na kahin jaa kar milan hota hai. Kabhi milne ka avsar milta hai toh ek doosre se poochte hain, ‘Aapne yeh kyun likha?’ Phir woh poochha jaata hai, ‘Aapne esse kyun gaaya?’ Kyunki dekhiye, jo kavita likhi jaati hai na, usmein kahin na kahin ek chhupa hua sur hota hai. Tabhi jaa kar woh kavita banti hai. Kyunki aakhir ke jo shabd hain, woh agli line se judne chahiye, milne chahiye. Agar aap koi bhi kavita theek se padhiye, toh usmein aapko ek lay milegi. Aur jo gaayak hote hain, woh iss lay ko pehchaante hain, aur usse pehchaan kar hi woh apna geet gaate hain.”
His explanation highlighted how poetry already contains rhythm and musical quality within its words. According to him, singers recognise that natural rhythm and use it while creating a song.
The conversation also brought attention to the lasting contribution of Jagjit Singh to ghazal music and the connection between poetry and melody.
