Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is proving to be a box office juggernaut, pulling in an impressive $7.8 million on its first Monday. The film now holds the title for the second-highest Monday gross for a horror film in the post-COVID era, trailing only A Quiet Place Part II ($9.5M). Its performance edges out notable titles like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ($6.2M), Nope ($4.8M), and Us ($6M).
The Monday take represents just a 36.6% drop from Sunday’s earnings, reflecting strong word-of-mouth and critical acclaim. In just four days, Sinners has already amassed $55.8 million domestically, surpassing One of Them Days to become 2025’s fifth-highest-grossing film.
Genre-Bending Horror with Historical Depth
Set in 1932 Mississippi, Sinners is a bold blend of supernatural horror, period drama, and action. Michael B. Jordan portrays twin brothers who return to their hometown, only to be stalked by a malevolent, supernatural force. The film’s chilling narrative is deeply rooted in historical trauma and Southern Gothic tradition.
Directed, co-written, and co-produced by Ryan Coogler, the film marks his fifth collaboration with Jordan. The star-studded cast includes Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Miles Caton, and Delroy Lindo. Composer Ludwig Göransson returns to score the film, adding another layer of eerie atmosphere to the haunting visuals.
Critical Praise and Cultural Resonance
Sinners premiered on April 3 and opened wide in U.S. theaters on April 18. It entered the market with a stellar 98% Rotten Tomatoes rating, fueled by its emotionally rich storytelling and socially resonant themes. Critics and audiences alike have praised the film’s mix of historical horror and modern commentary, calling it both terrifying and thought-provoking.
The film was produced by Coogler’s Proximity Media and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, who acquired the rights after a fierce bidding war. Principal photography ran from April to July 2024.
