Prithviraj Sukumaran’s L2 Empuraan has become the all-time highest Malayalam grosser, grossing more than ₹91 crore in India. Sacnilk reports that the film opened well on March 27 with a whopping ₹21 crore and went on to have a robust ₹88.25 crore net collection in its first week. Though daily collections dipped to single digits, the film is still going strong. On its second Friday, it grossed ₹3 crore, reaching a total of ₹91.25 crore. With the weekend looming, hopes are high for a possible collection boost.

Global Success
The success of L2 Empuraan is not just confined to the Indian box office. The movie has crossed the ₹250 crore worldwide mark, overtaking Manjummel Boys to become the top-grossing Malayalam film. Moreover, it has created history by becoming the first Malayalam film to have a ₹100 crore worldwide share. The film is also among the top-grossing Indian films of 2025.
Controversy and Criticism
Even though it achieved box office success, L2 Empuraan has not been without controversy, especially in relation to its depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots. The past of the film ties Prithviraj’s character, Zayed Masood, to a made-up account of the incidents. The criticism prompted the makers to willfully cut 24 scenes from the film. Suresh Gopi, deflecting claims that the ruling party coerced the team, dismissed such allegations in a parliamentary meeting. The movie is also featuring Tovino Thomas and Manju Warrier in key roles.
Legacy of L2 Empuraan
With L2 Empuraan still splashing the box office and public debate, it cements its status as a significant milestone for the history of Malayalam films.
