Abhay Deol talks about his sexuality and shares a photo kissing his own reflection in the mirror

Abhay Deol, known for his unconventional roles in films like Dev D and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, recently Abhay Deol stirred the internet by appearing in a photo shoot for where he is seen kissing his own reflection in the mirror. In an accompanying interview, he elaborated on his views about sexuality, rejecting the binary Western classification and advocating for a more nuanced Eastern perspective that encompasses the entire human experience. Deol stated, “I refuse the Western way of identifying sexuality because it’s so black and white. The Eastern approach is so different, it recognises the whole of us. I don’t define my sexuality, and this might sound controversial but for me it’s not something that I think can be defined.”

He further explained his belief that everyone embodies both masculine and feminine traits, and thus, “we are all they/them.” He remarked, “I think it’s more for the other person’s comfort, so that they can put you in a box, neatly slot you. Why should I define myself in Western terms? I have embraced all experiences in my life and I continue to do so. I don’t know how to label that, I don’t want to label that.”

Deol also discussed his concept of masculinity, which he defines as the ability to make others feel safe and included. He perceives himself as a protector and provider but is open to relinquishing that role if a woman wants to take the lead. This flexible approach to gender roles further underscores his progressive and inclusive outlook.

Abhay Deol will next appear in the film Bun Tikki, directed by Faraz Arif Ansari, alongside Shabana Azmi, Zeenat Aman, and Lin Laishram.

On the work front, Abhay Deol has an impressive portfolio of cult and critically acclaimed films, such as Socha Na Tha, Dev.D, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, and Raanjhanaa.
