The well-known new age Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap will be honoured by the French Government with its Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in recognition of his significant contributions to the arts, literature, or the propagation of these fields. The award will be presented to him during the ongoing 66th Cannes Film Festival. This was announced by the French Minister of Culture Aurelie Filippetti during a formal dinner jointly hosted by the Cannes Film Festival, and the Ministry of Tourism in India on 19th May 2013 in honour of the 100th anniversary of Indian cinema. Among those present were Dr. K. Chiranjeevi (Minister for Tourism, India), Gilles Jacob, Thierry Fremaux, Aishwarya Rai , Vidya Balan, Anurag Kashyap, Irrfan Khan, and the top ranking officials of the I&B Ministry.

Anurag Kashyap has the unique distinction of having been associated with four films in the Cannes Film Festival this year in one capacity or another. These include UGLY and THE CONGRESS (Both in Directors’ Fortnight), LUNCH BOX (Critics’ Week), MONSOON SHOOTOUT (Cannes Midnight Screening), and BOMBAY TALKIES (Special Screening).
