The Struggle with Depression
Deepika recounted her struggle with depression, which she initially failed to recognize. She described how her fast-paced career transition from school to sports, then modeling, and ultimately acting, left her pushing herself to extremes. In 2014, the actor suddenly fainted, which led her to realize she was suffering from depression. She emphasized that depression is often invisible; people may seem fine outwardly, but internally, they could be struggling with anxiety or depression.
The Turning Point
Living alone in Mumbai, Deepika had kept her feelings hidden for a long time. It was only when her mother came to visit her that she finally opened up. On the day her mother was about to leave for Bangalore, Deepika broke down and confessed that she felt hopeless and didn’t want to live. Her mother, understanding the signs, encouraged her to seek help from a psychologist. Deepika acknowledged the stigma surrounding mental health in India but stressed how talking about it made her feel lighter and more hopeful.
