Janhvi Kapoor reacts on ‘Gandhi vs Ambedkar’ debate remark

Janhvi Kapoor recently created a stir online by discussing casteism and the ideological debate between Mahatma Gandhi and BR Ambedkar. Her remarks garnered mixed reactions, with some praising her for engaging with important social issues and others dismissing it as a publicity stunt. In response, Janhvi has addressed these criticisms.

During her interview, Janhvi expressed her surprise at the skepticism she faced, questioning why it was hard for people to believe that a young female actor could have an informed opinion. She revealed that people accused her of staging a ‘PR plug’ and clarified that her comments were made casually during an interview. Concerned about the potential backlash, she consulted her PR team, who suggested that the Ambedkar vs. Gandhi debate might be seen as controversial. This led her to panic, fearing it could negatively impact the release of her movie.

“I was like I am a part of this society. I am a Hindu. But I know so little about it. I live on the street named after Ambedkar and even then I know almost nothing about his history. I should be ashamed,” she added.

Janhvi said that after reading the Annihilation Of Caste, she also watched multiple videos on the subject. She urged the youth to read up about Indian history and said, “As the youth of this country, it is very important to make informed decisions for the society with knowledge about the past.”

Janhvi explained that her interest in class and caste issues was sparked by spending time with filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan, who belongs to the Dalit community. Inspired by his experiences, she read Ambedkar’s “Annihilation of Caste,” which significantly altered her perspective on life. She acknowledged her own ignorance about her culture, despite living on a street named after Ambedkar, and expressed shame for not knowing more about his history.

In the midst of this controversy, Janhvi Kapoor was hospitalized for severe food poisoning. She received treatment at South Mumbai’s HN Reliance Hospital and has since been discharged and is recovering at home.
