On February 18, Khayyam turns 87.

Glamsham.Com wishes him a long and healthy life and reveals how his obsession for music compelled him to join Indian army!

Looking at the gentle physique of music director Khayyam, it may seem impossible that he might have worked as a soldier in Indian army! But… it is true!! He did serve the Indian army as a solider for two years, that too only to accomplish his fascination for films.

In an interview, recalling his early days Khayyam once said, ”Music has been my passion since childhood and for music I even sacrificed my education. Hence, when I landed in Mumbai my maternal uncle introduced me to classical music genius Baba Chishti. I immediately joined him without even caring that I was paid no money during my training.”

He continues, ”However later as days passed, I found living in Mumbai without money quite difficult. Therefore I went to my native place and requested by elder brother Mushtaq Bhai to help me with some money, but to my dismay my brother threw me out of the house’

Adds he, ‘Humiliated, I was wandering when I saw an advertisement in a newspaper calling youngsters to join the Indian army. They were also offering a handsome remuneration! Hence I joined the army as a sipahi (soldier) for two years. Later I came back to Mumbai and began my struggle with the money that I had saved from my remuneration.”
