RAMAYANA COMES ALIVE! SS Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu’s ‘SSMB29’ to Explore the Legendary Herb—What to Expect?

A Global Quest for the Legendary Sanjeevani Booti Visionary director SS Rajamouli, renowned for rewriting the history of Indian cinema with his epics Baahubali and RRR, is again back with yet another ambitious film SSMB29. Here, he has collaborated with superstar Mahesh Babu, international star Priyanka Chopra, and Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran for a jungle-based action-adventure inspired by Indian mythology. Based on a report by PeepingMoon.com, the basic plot of the film revolves around the mythological sanjeevani booti, the magical herb from the Ramayana that had believed-to-have-life-restoring powers.

Characterized as an Indiana Jones-type international travel adventure, SSMB29 will have Mahesh Babu’s character on a high-octane search to find the rare plant. “It’s a never-before-seen cinematic adventure,” an insider disclosed. “Rajamouli and his dad, award-winning screenwriter K.V. Vijayendra Prasad, have carefully interwoven the mythological fiber of the Ramayana into a contemporary, action-driven narrative.”

Myth Meets Modern Adventure
In the ancient epic Ramayana, the sanjeevani booti plays a crucial role when Lakshman, the brother of Lord Ram, is gravely wounded by Indrajit, Ravana’s son. Lord Hanuman is then tasked with retrieving the herb from the Himalayas. Unable to identify the specific plant, he carries an entire mountain segment back to Lanka to save Lakshman’s life. This tale of courage and devotion forms the mythological backbone of Rajamouli’s latest venture.

In SSMB29, however, the tale is retold in a contemporary context, fusing high-octane action, time-honored mythology, and emotional resonance to deliver a cinematic spectacle crafted specifically for international audiences. With breathtaking visuals and world-class VFX on the cards, Rajamouli plans to outdo even his own blockbusters in terms of scale and spectacle.

Star Power and Worldwide Vision
Mahesh Babu’s casting as the lead actor is his biggest film yet, with Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran lending star power and cross-cultural appeal. Their character details are not revealed, but the trio will probably play roles closely linked to the mythological and emotional heart of the film.

The movie is presently being produced in Hyderabad after a hectic shooting schedule in Odisha during the last April. The shooting is likely to resume in 2025 and carry on till mid-2026. SSMB29 is looking for a summer 2027 global theatrical release, setting it up as one of Indian cinema’s biggest spectacles of the decade.
