The cinematic clash on May 1 saw four major releases hit the big screens across India two from Bollywood (Raid 2 and The Bhootnii) and two from South Indian cinema (Hit: The Third Case and Retro). While Raid 2 leads over The Bhootnii in the Hindi circuit, the competition in South cinema between Hit 3 and Retro has been especially fierce.
Both Hit 3, a suspense thriller starring Nani and directed by Sailesh Kolanu, and Retro, a romantic-action drama headlined by Surya and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, were among the most anticipated releases of 2025. Initially, Retro stormed ahead on its opening day, but Hit 3 sustained stronger weekday earnings, ultimately gaining the upper hand in overall collections.
On its ninth day (second Friday), Hit 3 saw a dip but still outperformed Retro with ₹1.75 crore at the domestic box office, bringing its total to ₹65.25 crore. Meanwhile, Retro collected ₹1.35 crore on the same day, pushing its lifetime collection to ₹54.12 crore.
