While Dibakar Banerjee’s films right from KHOSLA KA GHOSLA to SHANGHAI appealed critics and a section of audience, it didn’t quite set the cash registers ringing in.

So, when we asked if he is betting commercially on his latest film DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY, Dibakar said, “There is no other way to do a film than to commercially bet on it because if the film fails commercially then you can’t do anything. My past films were not supposed to be box-office hits because all those were challenging the wisdom and expectations of public.”
“KHOSLA KA GHOSLA was a sleeper hit. Nobody knew that it would be so loved. OYE LUCKY shocked everybody because everyone was expecting me to do KHOSLA part 2. LSD (LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA) was out-n-out controversial film. SHANGHAI was a film that really told you what India was like. These kinds of films are not exactly sure formula ones for the numbers game that Bollywood plays with. These were also made with full realization not be box-office spinners. They were made at an affordable budget and that’s why I am making films after films,” Dibakar explains why his past films were not meant to be commercially viable ventures.
He talks further about how BYOMKESH is different from his other films.

“BYOMKESH BAKSHY is a film which can be a trendsetter. It can be a cool film, can be very outlined one but it has much bigger reach than any of my other films. At the same time we have taken care to make it at a budget where it is at least 30-40% cheaper than other Bollywood films which look the same. The kind of epic and fastness you see in BYOMKESH is impeccable. We have not thrown money but we have thrown planning and ingenuity at the problem. So, it looks much bigger and shinier than what it cost,” says the filmmaker, who seems to have dearly made the film.
Starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Anand Tiwari, Swastika Mukherjee, Meiyang Chang and others, DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY released all over on April 3, 2015.
