JOLLY LLB: Travails of legal fraternity with humorous touch

This Friday the audience indeed is going to have an encore of humour, highlighting the day to day struggles that the common man has to endure. For Subhash Kapoor who has directed JOLLY L.L.B., it indeed is coming of age film for him, as after watching his creation, Vidhu Vinod Chopra has given him go ahead to direct the third installment of MUNNABHAI series that would look into the legal profession in detail.

As a matter of fact the travesties of the legal profession and how the systems are manipulated to suit particular interests, the subject matter of JOLLY LLB has been an area that has been highlighted as a subject matter by film makers of Hindi cinema for quite a long time. On the eve of the release of JOLLY LLB here is a look at some of the interesting films that have tried to show a mirror to the legal profession in a humorous manner.

LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI: The scene where reference is made to Mahatma Gandhi and the lawyer does not know who he is in the context of the legal profession, points out the manner in which the system is manipulated by the legal fraternity to suit vested interests.

IMMAAN DHARAM: Big B at his deprecating best as a permanent witness giving witnesses in cases to suit the rich clients was a subtle pointer to the role of witnesses in deciding the fate of the case. His famous scene by describing the size of a male hen was one of the highlights of the film.

VISHWANATH: Pran playing the role of Golu Gawah, advocate without degree in this Subhash Ghai film, underlined the fact that if one is a good orator, and is able to be humorous in presenting his case before the court, lack of professional degree is not a limitation for him.

DAMINI: Tareekh pe taareekh, tareekh pe tareekh again was a pointer to how the lawyers on one pretext or the other continue to postpone the cases and it indeed is one of the primary reasons of mounting cases in the court. Sunny Deol had given a powerhouse of performance of how those who are just and try to present the cases in their truthful manner are forced to be pushed to margins and are considered as laggards.

KHUD-DAAR: Sanjeev Kumar in the role of a lawyer, promoted to being a judge, and coming back to adorn black court to save his brother was one of the significant performances in Hindi cinema as far as its association with the legal fraternity is concerned.

JUSTICE CHAUDHURY: Those were the days when Jeetendra ruled South and during that era he also enacted a role associated with legal fraternity which was dwelt with in a humorous manner.

ANDHA KANOON: Again a S. Ramanathan film, that sort of put the legal profession under the spotlight by highlighting the manner in which the system can be manipulated and Big B along with Rajnikant gave one of their most significant performances in the acting career. ANDHA KANOON also marked return of Pran as a villain after a really long time.

Now that Subhash Kapoor has already earned his credentials of dabbling in legal profession on the silver screen through JOLLY LLB one only hopes that his interpretation of MUNNABHAI would indeed be a laugh riot as well.
