What made Manoj Kumar teary-eyed?

Kasme Waade Pyaar Wafa …. This soul stirring song from Manoj Kumar’s hit film UPKAAR is still relevant as it compels one to ponder at the uncertainty of human relations.

PRAN AND GULSHAN BAWRA

Being a thought-provoking and philosophical number many wonder this song is penned by literary genius like Indeevar or Prem Dhanwan. In fact many websites have credited this song to Indeevar, Prem Dhawan and some have even credited it to Qamar Jalalabadi but the fact is the song is written by Gulshan Bawra.

Besides penning songs Gulshan Bawra even played comedy roles in many films (Including UPKAAR) hence due to his comedian image people mistook him as humourist but he had written many wonderful songs like ‘Mere Desh Ki Dharti…’ (UPKAAR), ‘Yaari Hai Imaan Mera…’ (ZANJEER) and the title track of AGAR TUM NA HOTE.

Secondly, few know that Manoj Kumar had no plans for the song in the film but when Bawra came up with the striking lines:

‘Kasme Waade Pyaar Wafaa Sab, Baatein Hain Baato Ka Kya,

Koi Kisi Ka Nahi Ye Jhoothhe, Naate Hain Naato Ka Kya…’

Manoj Kumar asked him to write just one stanza as the movie’s length was getting longer hence the stanza ‘Sukh Mein Tere Saath Chalenge, Dukh Mein Sab Mukh Modenge’…..was recorded.

However a day later after the recording of the song, Bawra stuck another hard-hitting stanza….

‘Hoga Masiha Saamne Tere, Phir Bhi Na Tu Bach Paayega

Tera Apna Khoon Hi Aakhir Tujhko Aag Lagaayega….’

Hence, Bawra requested music director Kalyan ji (of Kalyan ji Anand ji fame) to re-record the song with the additional stanza but he declined stating it will add to the budget of the film besides the movie was already getting longer.

However, when Bawra recited the stanza to Manoj Kumar tears rolled down his cheeks listening at the pragmatic verse and he got the stanza recorded!
