Anil Kapoor: I have never made a film just for myself

Anil Kapoor is keeping ultra busy as an actor, what with SHOOTOUT AT WADALA as well as RACE 2 occupying him for weeks at stretch. Still, while he has been working for outside production houses, has been in the industry for so long and pretty much seen it and done all, doesn’t he ever desire to make a film for himself where he could enact a dream role that may not have come his way?

Says Kapoor after a pause, ”Fortunately for me I have never ever had to make a film just for myself. Even when I was making GANDHI MY FATHER or SHORTKUT – THE CON IS ON, I cast Akshaye (Khanna) there and not myself. Instead I did Subhash Ghai’s BLACK & WHITE. In fact even when NO PROBLEM was being designed, I didn’t want to cast myself but then had to do it because sometimes you have to be a part of the film due to market compulsions. However that has to be an aberration than a rule. Whether it is me or Sonam for that matter, I won’t make a film just because one of us has to be cast in a central role.”

How about his ambition to be a TV producer? After all, he has been putting together infrastructure and logistics for the Indian adaptation of the TV series ’24’ and seems to be busy with that.

”Yes, I am totally involved with the team which is putting together ’24’. Right from its planning to its pre-production, I have totally immersed myself into it,” he says, ”In any case I am a producer’s son yaar; being involved comes naturally to me. Even in my earlier years when I was acting for my home productions like MR. INDIA, HAAMARA DIL AAPKE PAAS HAI, LOAFER, JUDAAI or WOH SAAT DIN, I was always in the know-how of what was happening on the ground. I haven’t let go off that trait.”
