Much-awaited film of Diljit Dosanjh, Panjab ’95, which has been in the bad books of censors since 2022 when it was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), is all set to release worldwide on February 7, 2025. The movie is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra and won’t be releasing in India for now. The international version will have the whole film because it did not face the obstacles created by the CBFC.
Diljit Dosanjh, playing the role of Jaswant Singh Khalra, spoke about the exciting news through his social media platforms. He released the teaser of the movie also, wherein he gives the audience a glimpse of the interesting drama. Panjab ’95 is the story of Khalra’s relentless fight for justice as he investigates the mysterious disappearances of Sikhs in the 1990s. Arjun Rampal and Suvinder Vicky also star in pivotal roles, adding depth to the film’s powerful narrative.

In a post on his social media, he shared, “Panjab ’95 releases In Cinemas Abroad only on 7th February. P.S. Full Movie, No Cuts #ChallengetheDarkness.” This makes it clear that the movie has been allowed to release in complete form without a single modification or censor cut. It had been waiting for it for so long in India in the face of many hurdles which it had to cross.
Since the submission of the film back in 2022, it has been under heavy scrutiny of the CBFC as three rounds of cuts have been presented. It was reported in September 2024 that the CBFC had proposed a total of 120 cuts for the film, following a suggestion of 85 cuts from July this year. These cuts were said to have been made because the film dealt with sensitive matters that involved political turmoil in Punjab during the 1990s and human rights violation issues.
Paramjit Kaur Khalra, wife of Jaswant Singh Khalra, feels that if the film was made at the consent of the family, then it should be released without altering a single frame. She had already voiced her protest against the CBFC in a meeting with *Mid-Day*, stating how the movie was significant to the portrayal of the issues that her husband, Jaswant, had been fighting for.
Panjab ’95 is a Honey Trehan-directorial, and is produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies. Going into its international release, despite all the controversies that have marred the film, the hopeful step forward would be those looking into this powerful story of justice and activism.
