Is Bollywood losing its magic? Hansal Mehta’s Blunt warning: ‘Reset or Die’

Director Hansal Mehta recently chipped in on the status of Hindi cinema and the emerging stars who are dictating its direction. On a lengthy note on X (formerly Twitter), Mehta posited that Hindi cinema requires a “reset” as the industry is mired in a vicious cycle of safe choices and rehashed formulas. His comment comes on the heels of a similar statement by director Vivek Agnihotri, who said that Bollywood’s fall could be a positive thing. Mehta feels that although the industry isn’t dying, it’s simply waiting to get disrupted by something that would make changes that matter.

Talent and Brazen Storytelling
Mehta underlined that the future of Hindi films is in “raw talent,” fearless storytelling, and filmmakers with the confidence to execute new scripts on screen. He identified that the intensity on stars alone no longer assures success, and what is really important is how strong and genuine the story is. According to Mehta, a new generation of actors, filmmakers, and writers is poised to redefine the industry, but meaningful change requires producers with vision, platforms prioritizing stories over algorithms, and directors valuing authenticity over formulaic familiarity.

Highlighting Emerging Talent
In his note, Mehta pointed out some of the emerging stars he feels can make a difference in the future of Hindi cinema. He cited Adarsh Gourav, who has become international, and Vedang Raina, who was impressive in Jigra. Others such as Ishaan Khatter, Zahan Kapoor, Aditya Rawal, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Raghav Juyal were also commended for their performances in films and series. Mehta’s message is straightforward: producers need to redirect their attention away from box office numbers and invest in storytelling and developing new talent to introduce positive change to the industry.
