Mariah Carey Refuses the ‘Legend’ Tag as She Is Named MusiCares 2026 Person of the Year

Mariah Carey earns MusiCares 2026 Person of the Year honour, reflecting on her legacy, philanthropy, and why she still doesn’t call herself a legend.

Mariah Carey continues to prove why she remains one of the most influential and successful recording artists in music history. More than three decades into her career, the global superstar is still breaking records, shaping pop culture, and redefining longevity in the music industry.

In a recent conversation with Billboard, Carey reflected on her remarkable journey, her commitment to philanthropy, and her latest honour—being named MusiCares’ 2026 Person of the Year. Despite boasting an extraordinary legacy that includes 19 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles and five Grammy Awards, Carey remains grounded and surprisingly modest about her status.

“Everybody has their own little meanings for what things they say,” Carey shared. “But I don’t call myself a legend. I’m just still working, still trying hard.” Her words reflect the mindset that has driven her career for over 30 years—an unwavering dedication to growth, creativity, and perseverance.

The Recording Academy’s philanthropic arm, MusiCares, will celebrate Carey at its annual gala on January 30, 2026. With this recognition, she joins an elite group of past honourees that includes Dolly Parton, Billy Joel, Gloria Estefan, Joni Mitchell, Smokey Robinson, and Berry Gordy.

MusiCares executive director Theresa Wolters praised Carey not only for her musical excellence but also for her humanitarian efforts. “Mariah Carey’s influence extends far beyond her remarkable artistry,” Wolters said, citing the singer’s extensive work in disaster relief, youth empowerment, and community support initiatives.

Carey emphasized that giving back has always been an important part of her life. Over the years, she has supported numerous causes, including human rights, education, and social justice. “All of us should do what we can to give back something,” she said, acknowledging that balancing philanthropy with a demanding career can be challenging but deeply meaningful.

One recent example of her activism came in December 2025, when Carey’s custom pink “Protect the Dolls” T-shirt—worn during a performance at a U.K. LGBTQ+ Pride festival—was auctioned by GLAAD for over $5,000 to support the transgender community.

The MusiCares 2026 gala promises to be a star-studded celebration, featuring tribute performances by artists such as Adam Lambert, Billy Porter, Charlie Puth, Foo Fighters, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Kesha, Maggie Rogers, and more. Jermaine Dupri will also deliver a special DJ set.

As Carey continues to evolve as both an artist and humanitarian, one thing is clear: her impact is far from over.
