Suriya’s Father Was Against Their Relationship – Here’s Why!

Sivakumar reveals he once opposed Suriya and Jyotika’s love story but agreed after his son insisted he would marry only her.

Suriya and Jyotika have long been regarded as one of the most beloved couples in Indian cinema. Their enduring relationship, which blossomed from friendship to marriage, has often been cited as an example of lasting love in the film industry. However, not many know that their journey to togetherness was not entirely smooth in the beginning. Recently, Suriya’s father, veteran actor Sivakumar, opened up about his initial resistance to their relationship and how he eventually came around.

In a candid conversation with Galatta, Sivakumar revealed that he was not immediately supportive when he first learned about his son’s love for Jyotika. According to him, he initially did not approve of the relationship. However, Suriya’s unwavering determination ultimately changed his perspective. Sivakumar recalled that his son firmly stated he would either marry Jyotika or remain single for life. Faced with his son’s adamant stance, the senior actor began to reflect on his own cinematic journey.

Sivakumar shared that during his acting career, he had appeared in nearly 150 films, many of which revolved around the theme of love marriages. This realization made him reconsider his opposition. He eventually decided to give his blessing, acknowledging both his son’s commitment and the values he had portrayed on screen for decades.

Adding a lighter note to the revelation, Sivakumar described Suriya as an extremely shy individual in his younger days. Interestingly, it was actress Radikaa Sarathkumar who reportedly encouraged Suriya to express his feelings to Jyotika. Her persuasion played a significant role in nudging the reserved actor to take the first step, which ultimately led to a blossoming romance. Sivakumar even joked about how his once-reticent son, who preferred to keep to himself, is now a proud father of two.

For the uninitiated, Suriya and Jyotika first met and fell in love while working on the film Poovellam Kettuppar. After dating for a period of time, the couple tied the knot on September 11, 2006, in a grand ceremony attended by family and members of the film fraternity. Over the years, they have built a strong partnership, balancing their professional commitments with family life. They are parents to two children, Diya and Dev, and continue to enjoy immense admiration from fans.

On the professional front, Suriya has an exciting slate of films lined up. He will next be seen in the fantasy action entertainer Karuppu. Directed by RJ Balaji, the film reportedly centers on a lawyer who becomes possessed by a powerful deity to combat injustice faced by marginalized communities. The intriguing premise has already generated buzz among fans. Actress Trisha Krishnan plays the female co-lead, and the film is expected to hit theaters in the summer.

In addition, the actor—widely acclaimed for his performance in Soorarai Pottru—is currently working on a family drama tentatively titled Suriya46. The project will reportedly feature Raveena Tandon and Mamitha Baiju in prominent roles, adding to the anticipation surrounding the film.

Suriya is also collaborating with Jithu Madhavan, known for his work on Aavesham, for a cop action-comedy tentatively titled Suriya47. The film is expected to revolve around the adventurous exploits of an eccentric police officer. Nazriya Nazim Fahadh will star as the female lead, while Naslen is set to play a pivotal role.

With a flourishing career and a heartwarming personal story that overcame early resistance, Suriya continues to remain a prominent and admired figure in the film industry.
