Son of Sardaar 2, the sequel to Ajay Devgn’s 2012 comedy hit, has kicked off its theatrical run with an underwhelming start. Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora and featuring a cast that includes Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan, and Ajay Devgn, the film opened to collections between Rs 6 crore to Rs 6.50 crore net on Day 1.
A Weaker Start Than the Original
Compared to its predecessor, Son of Sardaar 2 is off to a significantly lower opening. The original film, released in 2012, had collected Rs 9.50 crore on its opening day, despite facing stiff competition from Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan. In contrast, the sequel’s clash with Dharma Productions’ Dhadak 2 has barely generated buzz, with both films struggling to capture strong audience interest.
Day 1 Box Office Comparison:
Son of Sardaar (2012) – Rs 9.50 crore
Son of Sardaar 2 (2025) – Rs 6.75 crore
Poor Reviews and Weak Word-of-Mouth
While the first instalment benefitted from a star-studded cast including Sanjay Dutt, Juhi Chawla, Sonakshi Sinha, and a special appearance by Salman Khan, the sequel lacks similar buzz. Son of Sardaar ended its run with Rs 88 crore net and was declared a HIT, but early trends suggest the sequel may struggle to reach even half that total.
The film has opened to average to poor reviews, and early word-of-mouth isn’t encouraging. Without a positive shift in audience sentiment, Son of Sardaar 2 could see a sharp decline in the coming days.
Unless it picks up drastically over the weekend, the sequel risks being overshadowed by its predecessor in both impact and box office numbers.
