The live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon, out just last week, already has topped an astounding $350 million globally. Directed by Dean DeBlois and featuring Mason Thames, the Universal movie demonstrated that audiences still have a great affinity for the popular franchise that started with the 2010 animated blockbuster from DreamWorks.
Big Second Weekend, Huge Global Numbers
In its second weekend abroad, the movie took in $53.6 million, a modest decline of slightly more than 50% from its opening that included preview showings. Overseas, it has now made $197.7 million—and that doesn’t include Japan, where the film has yet to open.
In America, the film has earned $160.5 million, taking its total to $358.2 million at a global level. Having a budget for production of $150 million, and break-even of around $375–400 million, it is poised to cross profitability mark within days.
Eyeing a $650 Million Finish
It is projected that the movie might close its run between $630 million and $670 million. Besides the U.S. and Canada, its largest markets are Mexico ($24.5M) and China ($23.2M). European nations such as the UK, Spain, and France are also notable contributors.

Beating the Animated Originals
The 2010 original animation made $494 million, while the 2014 sequel made $621 million. The 2025 live-action installment is poised to beat both figures with the help of nostalgia and renewed interest from a wider market.
Sequels in the Works
With its success, already a sequel is on the cards. The good reception assures that the audience is still interested in the realm of Vikings and dragons, assuring a rosy future for the franchise.
