The Magic wears off! Snow White’s Box Office Numbers tell a story of struggle

Snow White, the latest live-action remake from Disney, has suffered greatly at the box office following its release. Even with a slight increase on Discount Tuesday, the movie has continued to fail, unable to draw in fans and leave any lasting impression.

Box Office Performance

Following a poor launch, during which the film earned a mere USD 2.6 million on Monday a decline of 74% from Sunday Snow White experienced a modest bounceback on Tuesday, earning USD 3.9 million due to reduced ticket prices. But this temporary respite was not to last long, as the film hit its next peak fall on Wednesday, when it earned a mere USD 2.1 million, its lowest grossing yet. The performance of the film on Discount Tuesday was pitted against other Disney movies, with Maleficent 2 taking USD 1.9 million (53% decline), Dumbo USD 2.4 million (49.3% fall), Jungle Cruise USD 3.3 million (28.8% decline), and Wonka taking USD 4.4 million (25.7% decline).

The 50 Million Milestone

Even with these disappointing figures, Snow White hit the USD 50 million milestone in the domestic box office on Wednesday—something the movie was anticipated to do over the opening weekend. This achievement comes against the backdrop of a drastic difference between expectations and reality for the movie.

Factors Behind the Disappointment

The movie, which features Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, has been criticized on numerous grounds. Zegler’s remarks regarding the 1937 version, describing it as “weird,” ignited fan outrage that had already criticized her for being cast in the role. Gadot’s vocal Zionist stance also raised heat throughout the production. Budgeted at USD 250 million, not including marketing expenses, the movie cannot even break even, and its prospects are gloomy.

Upcoming Competition

Snow White will soon encounter strong competition in the form of Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie next weekend. The new movie is anticipated to rake in USD 55-75 million in its opening weekend. Assuming the projections turn out to be accurate, Snow White might struggle to make back its losses.
