James Gunn’s much-anticipated superhero film Superman, starring David Corenswet, has made an impressive debut at the Indian box office. According to sacnilk.com, the film earned Rs 7 crore nett on its opening day, outperforming Bollywood releases like RajKummar Rao’s Maalik and Shanaya Kapoor-Vikrant Massey’s Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan.
Maalik opened with Rs 3.35 crore, while Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan managed only Rs 35 lakhs, making Superman the clear box office winner among the three.
Third-Best Hollywood Opening in India in 2025
Superman now stands as the third-highest Hollywood opener in India in 2025, following Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning and Scarlett Johansson’s Jurassic World: Rebirth. The film is drawing strong footfall in premium formats like IMAX and 4DX, with major revenue coming from urban centres.
Critical Acclaim and Strong Word-of-Mouth
The film has received positive reviews from both audiences and critics, which bodes well for its weekend collections. Its fresh take on Clark Kent’s early journey—focusing more on his identity struggle and relationship with Lois Lane than a full origin retelling has been widely appreciated.
I think the most important lesson #Superman teaches children is that if you have incredible power to do anything you want, you should use that power to help people. Not bully or exploit or oppress, but lift others up.

CBFC Makes Key Edits for Indian Release
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) suggested several edits for the Indian release. These include trimming a 33-second kiss between David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan and the removal of an 8-second scene featuring a slang gesture, replaced by a 2-second shot. Additionally, all vulgar words were removed from the dialogue.
Star-Studded Cast Adds to the Appeal
Alongside Corenswet, the film features a stellar cast including Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Milly Alcock.
With strong word-of-mouth and star power, Superman is on track for a stellar weekend at the Indian box office.
