Lokesh Kanagaraj’s upcoming action drama Coolie, led by superstar Rajinikanth, is already making history before hitting theatres. According to Sun Pictures, the film’s producers, Coolie has crossed $2 million in premiere pre-sales in North America — becoming the first Tamil film ever to achieve this milestone.
With two days remaining before its global release on August 14, Coolie has already overtaken the advance booking records of major Tamil blockbusters like Leo and Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1. More notably, it has broken Rajinikanth’s own record set by Kabali in 2016, which previously held the top spot at $1.9 million.
Social Media Erupts With Fan Frenzy
Sun Pictures shared the milestone on social media, writing:
“#Coolie varraan solliko! #Coolie is the First Tamil film to cross $2 million in premiere pre-sales in North America. #Coolie releasing worldwide August 14th.”
Fans quickly responded with celebration and praise. “Record maker & Record breaker #Thalaivar,” one fan posted, while another declared, “The movie will create a new history!”
New Benchmark for Tamil Cinema
With this achievement, Coolie now ranks as the highest-grossing Tamil film in US premiere sales, overtaking the previous top five: Kabali, Leo (2023), The GOAT (2024), Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 (2022), and Jailer (2023).
