After making a strong comeback with Karuppu, Suriya has returned to theatres with his latest film Vishwanath & Sons. Directed by Venky Atluri, who previously directed Lucky Baskhar, the film is a romantic drama and has opened on a positive note at the Indian box office. According to early estimates, Vishwanath & Sons collected around Rs. 17 crore on its opening day.
The film performed particularly well in the Telugu states, where it earned around Rs. 7 crore. Suriya’s home market Tamil Nadu also contributed strongly, with the film collecting Rs. 6.50 crore. Karnataka added Rs. 1.75 crore, while Kerala contributed Rs. 1.60 crore. The remaining Indian markets together added around Rs. 15 lakh.
For a romantic drama, the opening is considered a good start. The film has also received largely positive reactions from audiences, which could help its collections over the weekend. The Independence Day holiday is expected to give the film an additional boost, with more people likely to visit theatres.
However, Vishwanath & Sons is facing competition from films that were already running in theatres. DC and Spider Man: Brand New Day are both expected to continue attracting audiences during the week. This could affect the pace at which Suriya’s film grows after its opening day.
The territory wise India collections of Vishwanath & Sons are Tamil Nadu Rs. 6.50 crore, AP and TS Rs. 7.00 crore, Karnataka Rs. 1.75 crore, Kerala Rs. 1.60 crore and the rest of India Rs. 0.15 crore. The total India collection stands at Rs. 17.00 crore.
Vishwanath & Sons follows Sanjay Vishwanath, played by Suriya, an Olympic level sportsperson who was raised by his mother to succeed in his chosen sport. His life changes when he discovers that his son urgently needs medical treatment. During this difficult period, he meets Maddy, a lively and carefree woman in her 20s.
Mamitha Baiju plays the female lead, while Raveena Tandon and Radikaa Sarathkumar also feature in important roles.
With a good opening and favourable word of mouth, Vishwanath & Sons will now depend on its weekend performance. The Independence Day holiday could prove important in deciding whether the film can maintain its early momentum.
