Bollywood box-office report of the week : 16 february 2012

The coming Friday will see the release of the Prateik-Amy starrer, EKK DEEWANA THA, the Dilip Shankar directed MARRIED TO AMERICA and the horror film with a strange title, ?. It is obvious that the front runner is going to be EKK DEEWAANA THA, though the film is not carrying the kind of buzz that it was expected to, despite big names like A.R. Rahman and Javed Akhtar being associated with it.

Moving on, the Valentine week release, Karan Johar's Kareena-Imran starrer, EK MAIN AUR EKK TU, was expected to embark on a good to decent start (especially at high end multiplexes), more so due to the rom-com genre, reasonably popular music and of course the week when the cupid strikes! Unfortunately, the start on Friday was quite dull, but as was expected, the film picked up noticeably on Saturday and also on Sunday, though a big jump was missing. All the same the opening weekend of around 20.50 crore is a good enough platform, and the film is likely to end with a 30 crore plus week, which will make the 37-38 crore (all inclusive cost) EMAET an earning proposition. EK MAIN AUR EKK TU has generated good shares in the overseas (especially US), grossing ?242,200 from UK and $637,100 from the US during the opening weekend (10-12 February).

Meanwhile the actual published numbers of One Up Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.'s GALI GALI CHOR HAI, came in somewhat lower than Saturday estimations as it collected 60 lakhs from Bombay, 20 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.25 lakhs from Surat, 5.30 lakhs from Baroda, 2.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 4 lakhs from Pune, 2.35 lakhs from Nasik, 1.50 lakhs from Goa, 30 lakhs from Delhi city, 5.75 lakhs from Noida, 4 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 3.40 lakhs from Kanpur, 5.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 2.50 lakhs from Agra, 1.25 lakhs from Allahabad, 6.50 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.20 lakhs from Faridabad, 1 lakh from Panipat, 1.75 lakhs from Chandigarh, 1 lakh from Zirakpur, 1.15 lakh from Jalandhar, 5.20 lakhs from Calcutta, 1 lakh from Siliguri, 3.65 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.20 lakhs from Jabalpur, 1 lakh from Akola, 4 lakhs from Raipur, 8.50 lakhs from Indore (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 1 lakh from Gwalior (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 3.50 lakhs from Bhopal, 8.25 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 1 .20 lakhs from Ajmer, 1.55 lakhs from Kota, 7.15 lakhs from Hyderabad, 1 lakh from Aurangabad and 5.15 lakhs from Bangalore. Concluding with Karan Malhotra's AGNEEPATH, the film saw a big fall in the second week after a huge opening week. But that has been the case with most big first week grossers, barring a few examples.
