Bollywood box-office report of the week : 19 january 2012

It is an open week at the box-office with no significant release. And that means that all eyes are naturally on Karan Johar's Republic Day release, the Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra starrer, AGNEEPATH, which is expected be the first major success of 2012.

Looking back, none of the four new releases of last Friday, GHOST, CHAALIS CHAURAASI, SADDA ADDA and TUTIYA DIL managed to impress at the ticket window. Comparatively speaking Shiney Ahuja's GHOST fared the best, closely followed by Hriday Shetty's CHAALIS CHAURAASI.

Moving on, Abbas-Mustan's Abhishek, Bipasha, Bobby, Sonam and Neil starrer, PLAYERS, could not quite improve on its dull start as it collected 3 crore from Bombay, 1 crore from Ahmedabad, 21 lakhs from Surat, 21.55 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 5 cineams unreceived), 15 lakhs from Rajkot, 3.25 lakhs from Jamnagar, 8 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 22.35 lakhs from Pune, 2.50 lakhs from Goa, 3 lakhs from Belgaum, 2.15 crore from Delhi city, 30 lakhs from Noida, 21.25 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 21 lakhs from Kanpur, 28 lakhs from Lucknow, 13.75 lakhs from Agra, 7 lakhs from Allahabad, 40 lakhs from Gurgaon, 6.35 lakhs from Faridabad, 2.50 lakhs from Kururshetra, 5.50 lakhs from Panipat, 15 lakhs from Chandigarh, 6.35 lakhs from Jalandhar, 4.35 lakhs from Amritsar, 6.65 lakhs from Ludhiana, 3.65 lakhs from Bhatinda, 3 lakhs from Ambala, 45 lakhs from Calcutta, 5.65 lakhs from Siliguri, 4 lakhs from Guwahati, 17.65 lakhs from Nagpur, 4.50 lakhs from Amravati, 8.50 lakhs from Jabalpur, 2.50 lakhs from Akola, 14 lakhs from Raipur, 27.35 lakhs from Indore (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 4.15 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 10.25 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 40 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 6.35 lakhs from Ajmer, 10.65 lakhs from Kota, 4.15 lakhs from Bikaner, 6.75 lakhs from Udaipur, 80 lakhs from Hyderabad, 6.25 lakhs from Aurangabad (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 5 lakhs from Latur, 50 lakhs from Bangalore, 4.20 lakhs from Mangalore, 4 lakhs from Vijaywada, 4.65 lakhs from Visakhapatnam and 3.75 lakhs from Madras. With a below par 22.50 crores during the opening week, PLAYERS will find it difficult to break even. PLAYERS has also disappointed in the overseas grossing ?193,000 from UK and $310,112 from the US till the second weekend (13-15 January).

Meanwhile Farhan Akhtar's Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra starrer, DON 2: THE KING IS BACK, saw a huge fall for the first time since its release, but that during the third week (after two good weeks). During the latest outing DON 2 collected 65 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 17 cinemas unreceived), 15 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.50 lakhs from Surat, 5.75 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 18.55 lakhs from Rajkot, 2 lakhs from Jamnagar, 10.20 lakhs from Pune, 1.15 lakhs from Belgaum, 60 lakhs from Delhi city, 10 lakhs from Noida, 5 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 5.25 lakhs from Kanpur, 8.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 2.50 lakhs from Agra, 1.50 lakhs from Allahabad, 13 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.65 lakhs from Faridabad, 5 lakhs from Chandigarh, 2 lakhs from Jalandhar, 2 lakhs from Ludhiana, 1.25 lakhs from Amritsar, 1.10 lakhs from Bhatinda, 25 lakhs from Calcutta, 2 lakhs from Siliguri, 1.50 lakhs from Guwahati, 7.15 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.25 lakhs from Amravati, 1.65 lakhs from Jabalpur, 1.50 lakhs from Akola, 4.15 lakhs from Raipur, 4 lakhs from Indore, 1.15 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 3.85 lakhs from Bhopal, 20.65 lakhs from Jaipur, 1 lakh from Ajmer, 2.50 lakhs from Kota, 2 lakhs from Udaipur, 15 lakhs from Hyderabad, 2 lakhs from Aurangabad, 35.50 lakhs from Bangalore, 3.65 lakhs from Mangalore, 2 lakhs from Vijayawada, 2.65 lakhs from Visakhapatnam and 3.50 lakhs from Madras. Adding another 5.50 crores, DON 2: THE KING IS BACK has netted 105.75 crores in three weeks from India, and the dubbed (Tamil & Telugu) version(s) added another 3.50 crores. In India the film will technically be called a hit, but in reality it is a superhit (worldwide) for Reliance Big Entertainment, who paid Rs. 80 crore (excluding print & publicity cost) for the global rights of DON 2. The film is an overseas blockbuster grossing ?1,424,000 from UK and $3,651,700 from the US till the fourth weekend (13-15 January).

Concluding with Milan Luthria's THE DIRTY PICTURE, the film is ending its superb run as it collected 15 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 4.20 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1 lakh from Baroda (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 12 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.65 lakhs from Noida, 1.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2.25 lakhs from Lucknow, 1 lakh from Chandigarh, 3.25 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.35 lakhs from Indore, 2 lakhs from Jaipur, 2 lakhs from Hyderabad and 5.20 lakhs from Bangalore. Adding another 75 lakhs THE DIRTY PICTURE has netted 80.50 crores in six weeks from India. Additionally the dubbed (Tamil & Telugu) version(s) added another 4 crores. It is but a formality to say that THE DIRTY PICTURE is a blockbuster. The film though has not done well in the overseas (better in US) grossing ?131,500 from UK and $462,000 from the US.
