Bollywood box-office report of the week : 25 november 2009

The coming Friday will see a solo release in the form of of Priyadarshan's Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Suneil Shetty, Sameera Reddy and Katrina Kaif starrer, DE DANA DAN. Banking on a publicity blitzkrieg, popular soundtrack and the team's previous track record (s) DDD is set to embark on a good start, boosted more by the holiday weekend (Eid-ul-Azha). However, what will be interesting to observe whether or not the film sustains after a big start, unlike Akshay Kumar's last few releases.

Last week's Rensil D'Silva directed KURBAAN, featuring Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi, was expected to have a good and safe run at the ticket window. However, the unexpected happened and the Karan Johar produced KURBAAN, which was released at 112 cinemas of Bombay-Thane (thru UTV motion pictures), saw an ordinary start. By and large KURBAAN saw a dull opening at many places and fairly good start at some centers. The picture remained the same throughout the weekend with a marginal pick up on Sunday. Trade feels that KURBAAN is a weak fare which will entail heavy losses to its all-world distributors UTV. In the Overseas, the movie grossed a below par ?164,468 from UK and a decent $403,678 from US, during the opening weekend (20-22 November), but given the cast, mounting, US backdrop and the banner, it can be termed as another under-performance.

With MAREGA SALAA having been postponed to a later date, the only other release of last Friday was SHAABASH! YOU CAN DO IT!, which failed to do 'it' and has already been declared a trade disaster.

Of the two major releases of last to last week, Bollywood's love story film (with the Mumbai cyclonic rains as the backdrop), TUM MILE, proved a disaster whereas the Hollywood's disaster movie 2012, became a major hit, not just in its original English version but even in the dubbed Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu versions.

Just too see how well 2012 performed check out some of the numbers from the English and Hindi (dubbed) versions. 2012 collected 3.25 crore from Bombay, 80 lakhs from Pune, 1.25 crore from Delhi city, 45 lakhs from Noida and 50 lakhs from Calcutta. The Hindi version PRALAY KI SHURUAAT collected 1.40 crore from Bombay, 1.15 crore from Ahmedabad, 71 lakhs from Pune, 90 lakhs from Delhi city, 70 lakhs from Calcutta and 40 lakhs from Nagpur. In its opening week 2012 has already been declared a super-hit netting around 25 crores from India (English plus dubbed).

The Kunal Deshmukh directed Bhatt camp venture TUM MILE was no match for 2012 (as we had indicated last week) and crashed after a so-so weekend. The Emraan-Soha starrer has also been out rightly rejected in the Overseas with ?38,005 till the second weekend (20-22 November) from UK.

The other release of the same week, the Aftab-Aamna starrer AAO WISH KAREIN could not complete even a day's run at many cinemas. The film barely collected 2 lakhs from Mumbai and 1 lakh from Delhi city. Needless to add that AAO WISH KAREIN is a washout.

Meanwhile the Rajkumar Santoshi directed AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI had another very good weekend to show but dropped markedly thereafter. APKGK has managed very good shares in the second weak also. The film collected 3.15 crores from Bombay, 55 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.35 lakhs from Surat, 2.15 lakhs from Nandiad, 1.50 lakhs from Palanpur, 7 lakhs from Baroda, 15 lakhs from Rajkot, 5.15 lakhs from Jamnagar, 3 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 1.35 lakhs from Porbandar, 3.50 lakhs from Gandhidham, 60 lakhs from Pune, 3.15 lakhs from Solapur, 2.45 lakhs from Sangli, 10 lakhs from Nasik, 11 lakhs from Goa, 2 lakhs from Belgaum, 2 crores from Delhi city, 30 lakhs from Noida, 17 lakhs from Noida, 17 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 13 lakhs from Kanpur, 25 lakhs from Lucknow, 9 lakhs from Agra, 2 lakhs from Allahabad, 3 lakhs from Meerut, 1.35 lakhs from Bareilly, 2.65 lakhs from Gorakhpur, 35 lakhs from Gurgaon, 10 lakhs from Faridabad, 5.35 lakhs from Chandigarh, 2.75 lakhs from Kurushetra, 2.15 lakhs from bhatinda, 4 lakhs from Panipat, 1 lakh from Pathankot, 75 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.75 lakhs from Darjeeling, 26 lakhs from Nagpur, 6.35 lakhs from Jabalpur, 2.75 lakhs from Akola, 13 lakhs from Raipur, 2 lakhs from Chandrapur, 1.50 lakhs from Khandwa, 25 lakhs from Indore, 4 lakhs from Gwalior, 30 lakhs from Jaipur, 2.75 lakhs from Jodhpur, 11 lakhs from Ajmer, 2 lakhs from Bikaner, 7.50 lakhs from Kota, 40 lakhs from Hyderabad, 4.50 lakhs from Aurangabad, 4.50 lakhs from Mangalore, 17 lakhs from Bangalore and 3 lakhs from Madras. Adding another 16.50 crores, AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI has netted an excellent 54.50 crores in two weeks from India. The Ranbir-Katrina starrer is now a hit plus from India. The film has also done quite well in the overseas grossing ?406,974 from UK up to the second weekend (20-22 November) and $741,238 from US at the end of its run.

Moving on, JAIL crashes further collecting 10 lakhs from Bombay, 1.20 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 4.65 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.65 lakhs from Noida and 1.15 lakhs from Gurgaon. With another 25 lakhs, JAIL has netted a poor 6.40 crores in two weeks from India. The Neil-Mugdha starrer is a trade disaster that will entail huge losses to all concerned. The Madhur Bhandarkar directed JAIL is also an overseas disaster with a final gross of ?12,314 from UK while the US collections have not been disclosed.

Our last entry for this week is once again Rohit Shetty's ALL THE BEST. The film is on its last legs collecting 5 lakhs from Bombay, 1.05 lakhs from Delhi city and 2.50 lakhs from Hyderabad. With another 15-20 lakhs, ALL THE BEST ends its run with a decent 41 crores in five weeks from India. The Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Fardeen Khan and Bipasha Basu starrer, ALL THE BEST ends up as an above average fare due to its ordinary run after the second weekend, and fails to emulate the big success of the team's last Diwali release, GOLMAAL RETURNS. While in the Overseas ALL THE BEST has been rejected grossing a poor ?107,521 from UK and an equally ordinary $120,713 from the US, at the end of its run.
