Bollywood box-office report of the week : 7 april 2011

With the flow of fresh and big films commencing from last week via GAME and F.A.L.T.U., the coming Friday is all set to see the release of a real biggie, UTV's Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Irrfan Khan, Sonam Kapoor and Rimi Sen starrer, THANK YOU. Though the usual high buzz for an Anees Bazmee and Akshay Kumar starrer seems to be less this time, still THANK YOU is likely to start with quite a reasonable opening.

Last Friday saw the release of EROS International and Excel Entertainment's GAME, along with Vashu Bhagnani's F.A.L.T.U.. While Jackky Bhagnani's F.A.L.T.U. saw heavy patronization from the campus crowd and improved as the weekend progressed, unfortunately the same cannot be said about the Abhinay Deo directed Abhishek Bachchan starrer GAME which had a weak start and could not improve much during the weekend. Both the films were hit hard on Saturday by the ICC World Cup Cricket final. In the Overseas too GAME had a poor show grossing ?58,000 from UK and $ 82,000 from US during the opening weekend (1- 3 April).

Checking out Anup Jalota's MONICA, the film had poor run and collected 1.50 lakhs from Bombay, 1 lakh from Ahmedabad, 2.50 lakhs from Delhi city, 2 lakhs from Lucknow and 1 lakh from Allahabad. During the opening week MONICA barely mustered up 20 lakhs from India and is a trade disaster.

Even Phenomenal Crafts PVT. Ltd.'s HAPPY HUSBANDS managed quite an unhappy show collecting 10 lakhs from Bombay, 3.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 2 lakhs from Delhi city and 1 lakh from Agra. Netting just about 30 lakhs in the first week HAPPY HUSBANDS turned out to be another box-office disaster.

Meanwhile, the film that defied all odds and managed to stay afloat even during cricket fever peak, TANU WEDS MANU, continues its dream run as it collected 20 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 19 cinemas unreceived), 9 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.50 lakhs from Baroda, 3 lakhs from Surat, 1 lakh from Bharuch, 1.55 lakhs from Rajkot, 1.65 lakhs from Pune (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 1.10 lakhs from Nasik, 40 lakhs from Delhi city, 5.65 lakhs from Noida, 4.20 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 4.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 9 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.75 lakhs from Agra, 2.35 lakhs from Allahabad, 1 lakh from Meerut, 10 lakhs from Gurgaon, 4 lakhs from Faridabad, 1 lakh from Hissar, 1.55 lakhs from Panipat, 7.25 lakhs from Chandigarh, 2.50 lakhs from Jalandhar, 1.15 lakhs from Bhatinda, 1.35 lakhs from Ambala, 3 lakhs from Ludhiana, 2.10 lakhs from Patiala, 3 lakhs from Amritsar, 1 lakh from Karnal, 1 lakh from Jammu, 1.65 lakhs from Raipur, 1.20 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 4 lakhs from Indore, 2 lakhs from Bhopal, 3 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 1 lakh from Ajmer, 1 lakh from Kota, 1.15 lakhs from Hyderabad (collections from other cinemas unrecived), 1 lakh from Latur, 5 lakhs from Bangalore and 1.10 lakhs from Mangalore. Adding another 2.50 crores, TANU WEDS MANU has netted 39 crores in five weeks from India. The Madhavan-Kangna starrer is now hit plus. TANU WEDS MANU has also done quite well in the Overseas (even with a limited release) grossing ?100,000 in the UK till the sixth weekend (1-3 April) and $240,000 from the US.

Concluding yet again with Nikhil Advani's PATIALA HOUSE, the film hangs on and collected 1 lakh from Bombay, 1 lakh from Ahmedabad, 5 lakhs from Delhi city, 1 lakh from Ghaziabad, 1.25 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.35 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1 lakh from Chandigarh and 7 lakhs from Jaipur. Adding another 35 lakhs, PATIALA HOUSE has netted around 33.75 crores in seven weeks from India. The Rishi Kapoor, Akshay Kumar and Anushka Sharma starrer has failed commercially, though the losses have been minimal. PATIALA HOUSE has also under-performed in the Overseas (much better in UK) grossing ?700,000 from UK and $650,000 from the US at the end of its run.
