Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa in the Lead Roles
Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa star as Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule. Both the actors portray the couple’s struggle against the conventional norms in the colonial state of Maharashtra. Their struggles, from opening India’s first girls’ school to resisting untouchability, are showcased in the trailer. Pratik Gandhi’s depiction of Jyotirao reflects his steadfast opposition to Brahminical orthodoxy, supporting widow remarriage and the upliftment of lower castes, whereas Patralekhaa’s depiction of Savitribai highlights her as the first female teacher of India, going against norms that excluded women from education.
A Tale of Courage and Reformation
Through commanding dialogues and an inspiring score, the trailer gives a captivating glimpse of how they traveled through resistance and shame to the enormous influence of their reform movement. Jyotirao Phule’s Satyashodhak Samaj (1873) transformed into a compelling force against oppressive casteism, whereas Savitribai made her contribution, in addition to education, also to women and social justice.
Legacy of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule
Jyotirao Phule is also responsible for the invention of the term ‘Dalit’ and his work Gulamgiri continues to be a strong critique of caste systems.
