RASCALS: another addition to two guys chasing one girl

It has been one of the most successful formulae of Hindi films, where two guys, who invariably are friends, chase a girl. The metamorphosis that the idea has undergone is that in the earlier times while one guy would withdraw and sacrifice, and provide an opportunity for pathos and sorrow, it has been replaced by machinations, with the objective of creating humorous scenes. RASCALS is the latest addition to this category, where two of the finest comedians of the present times, Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn pair together for a madcap to grab the interest of Kangana Ranaut. For Sanjay Dutt it indeed is an evolution from SAAJAN where he had played the role of a silent lover boy who was ready to sacrifice his love for Madhuri Dixit for the sake of his half-brother Salman Khan. RASCALS as the name suggests provides an opportunity to both these actors to be as cunning as ever to grab the attention of Kangana Ranaut and in the process create comical situations, be it through getups or otherwise. As the reference of RASCALS is derived from using comic situations to grab the eyeballs of the female, here is an attempt to have a relook at such attempts from the past.

ANDAZ APNA APNA: Though when it was released, it was a disaster, this Aamir-Salman starrer set the trend for one-upmanship to grab the attention of the female counterpart. It was Karisma Kapoor whose attention was being sought, but in the mille there was a silent player in the form of Raveena Tandon. One wonders whether RASCALS also has such surprise in store!

MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI: Again a madcap comedy starring Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar vying for attention of Priyanka Chopra, but in the final analysis it turned out that it was a friend who was at work (Akshay Kumar) to let his friend (Salman Khan) come out of his shell and express his love for Priyanka Chopra, but does it happen in real life?

GOLMAAL: Rohit Shetty's first film in the series relies on the theme of two boys falling for a girl and associated snafus to create a cult brand name for himself in the form of GOLMAAL. Indeed, the comic situations to woe a girl in reality evolved from GOLMAAL where either of the two characters played by Ajay Devgn and Arshad Warsi left no stone unturned to belittle the other in the eyes of Rimi Sen to gain her sympathy and heart. So Ajay Devgn already has an experience of playing such roles.

DEEWANA MASTANA: Anil Kapoor and Govinda vying for Juhi Chawla by even taking recourse to becoming mad persons was another manifestation of Hindi cinema trying to juxtaposition wooing of a girl by two boys. It was the first film where the girl leaves both of them and walks off in the sun with another person leaving both Anil Kapoor and Govinda in lurch. In fact DOSTANA also underlined the same sentiment that if two guys are wooing a girl, it does not mean that the girl would fall for either of them she can walk away in the sun with the third person altogether. What if it happens in case of RASCALS as well?

MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA: Salman Khan again becoming a part of the team where two boys chase a girl, other boy being Sohail Khan and the lady interest being wooed was Katrina Kaif. For a change here the silent lover of the hero aka Salman Khan got to keep the hero for herself in the end, underlining the fact that silence indeed turns out to be golden when expression of matters of the heart are concerned.

KABHI HAAN KABHI NA: Shah Rukh Khan in this Aziz Mirza film formed a part of the triangle to woo Suchitra Krishnamurthy along with Deepak Tijori, and with an emotional angle of a gangster thrown in; pitching in for the hero aka Shah Rukh Khan it was an interesting comedy. It was also the film where the hero did not get the girl but a new girl emerged on the horizon to explore a relationship in form of Juhi Chawla.

HUM TUM SHABANA: Sagar Ballary's new offering starring Tusshar Kapoor and Minissha Lamba along with Shreyas Talpade forming the third angle of the triangle. Sagar Ballary must be hoping that the brand image that both of his lead actors have cultivated through GOLMAAL would rub-off on HUM TUM SHABANA as well.

NAYEE PADOSAN: It invariably happens in the Hindi cinema that when a new girl comes into the neighborhood the eligible boys start competing amongst themselves to grab attention. It happened in NAYEE PADOSAN as well where three friends were vying for Mehak Chahal's attention and each of the friends belonging to three different regions of the country provided ample scope for comic situations, it flowing from language and the cultural nuances.

Now it has to be seen whether in case of RASCALS also Kangana Ranaut runs off with a third person or either Sanjay Dutt or Ajay Devgn gets to marry her?
