Kinemathek Hamburg will be hosting the *ANURAG KASHYAP-RETROSPECTIVE* from 11-16 July 2012 at the Metropolis Cinema, Hamburg. The event will take place on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Indian cinema, during the INDIA WEEK 2012 in Germany.
Under the banner PIONEERS OF INDIAN CINEMA, Metropolis Cinema will be screening five films directed by Kashyap, who will also attend the occasion as the guest of honor. The retrospective will open with the film DEV-D followed by the screening of both parts of GANGS OF WASSEYPUR, THAT GIRL IN YELLOW BOOTS and BLACK FRIDAY during the course of the event. Notable filmmaker, Fatih Akin of the Turkish-German origin will introduce Kashyap and his works.
Rita Baukrowitz, Head of International Programming at Kinemathek Hamburg commented, "Under the title of 'Daring Pioneers of Indian cinema', the Metropolis cinema is now presenting for the works of outstanding Indian directors. This time the focus is on present-day cinema and on Anurag Kashyap, the pioneer of the new independent movement within the Hindi film industry. In his films, Anurag Kashyap draws special inspiration from the works of the Hamburg film-maker Fatih Akin – a feeling of admiration that is mutual. We are looking forward to an interesting cinema discussion between Fatih Akin, Anurag Kashyap and Prashant Nair."
Kashyap quoted, "I am very honored to be presenting all my films in Hamburg and really happy to be hanging out with Fatih again. He always inspires me and this time too hoping to come back rejuvenated."
The Kinemathek Hamburg, in cooperation with the Indian Embassy in Berlin, the Consulate-General of India in Hamburg and the Hamburg Ministry of Culture, is presenting this comprehensive film program on modern Indian cinema to commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Run by Kinemathek Hamburg, Metropolis Cinema is a non-profit organization focusing on art-house cinema. It also owns and maintains an extensive film archive – focuses on all varieties of art and experimental film, documentaries and the vast heritage of film cultures all over the world. The institution has become a citizen initiative and is a prominent establishment in the cultural landscape of Germany.
Anurag Kashyap has received widespread acclaim for his fearless and experimental visual style, the innovative narrative structure of his films. He is considered to be amongst path-breaking filmmakers of Indian cinema.
