Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films is bringing ‘Munjya’ to theatres on June 7. This horror-comedy, starring Mona Singh, Sharvari, and Abhay Verma, follows a child’s spirit in search of his ‘Munni’. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, known for Marathi hits like ‘Zombivli’, the film’s teaser and trailer mention ‘Munni’, sparking rumors about a cameo by Malaika Arora. The actress is famous for her iconic dance number “Munni Badnaam Hui” from ‘Dabangg’.
However, Aditya Sarpotdar clarified exclusively to PeepingMoon that Malaika will not be appearing in ‘Munjya’. He explained, “Malaika only appears in phone footage, performing her Munni Badnaam Hui dance, which one of my characters is holding. Beyond that, she is not in the film. While Malaika is famously known as Munni, the Munni in my film is different.”
Sarpotdar added, “You might think of an alternate theory. In ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, there was a Munni. But in ‘Munjya’, Munni is just a generic term for a beloved girl. The story revolves around who she is, her connection to Munjya, and the reference within the film. There’s no Malaika in my film, but there is an interesting twist to the Munni narrative.”
Discussing the film’s development, Sarpotdar said, “For me, the hero and protagonist is Munjya. When building the film’s world, my focus was on presenting the primary character in the best possible way. The world he comes from is so intriguing that most efforts went into getting that right.”
