What inspired you to direct Gabru Gang, a film centred around kite flying and set in the vibrant streets of Amritsar?
While attending a wedding in Amritsar, I stumbled upon a torn kite dangling from a tree, which sparked a creative idea in my mind. The vibrant ambiance of Amritsar, coupled with the sight of the torn kite, inspired me to craft a fictional story. Being a passionate food enthusiast, I’ve always harboured a desire to undertake a project in Amritsar, allowing me to relish the delectable cuisine of Punjab while working. It took me two days to lay the foundation of the story, and I eagerly awaited my return to Mumbai to flesh out the narrative further.
Can you share some insights into the character development process for Rajbeer Saluja and his friends Arshad and Uday?
In Gabru Gang, Rajbeer Saluja hails from Amritsar and has a passion for kite flying, although he’s unfamiliar with the competitive aspect of it. During my time in Amritsar, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the local culture and learned about the tradition of kite flying competitions. The city is alive with excitement during Lohri, with the sky adorned with colourful kites. Drawing inspiration from the people I met in Amritsar, I developed Rajbeer’s character to reflect the spirit of Punjab. The film follows Rajbeer’s journey as he navigates various emotions, from encountering a city girl to experiencing the bond with his sister and friends. As the story unfolds, viewers witness the strength of friendship and love in the face of adversity. Gabru Gang is a family friendly film that resonates with audiences of all ages, devoid of any vulgarity, making it an enjoyable experience for parents and children alike.
The teaser for Gabru Gang showcases electrifying kite-flying competitions. What was the most challenging aspect of filming these action-packed scenes?
For Gabru Gang, I enlisted Shehzade Abbas as the kite instructor for my characters. He’s not only the captain of the Indian national kite team but also possesses an extensive knowledge of kite-flying tricks. This film features a groundbreaking kite battle, a first of its kind, requiring expertise to direct such scenes effectively. To bring my vision to life, I collaborated with storyboard artist Rohit to visualize how the kites of my characters would appear on screen. Upon sharing these ideas with both the director of photography and Shehzade Abbas, we meticulously crafted an exhilarating 18-minute climax that promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
As a director, what do you hope audiences will take away from Gabru Gang after watching it in theaters?
Experience the film for yourself, as it reminds us that childhood games hold a timeless charm and beauty. Despite the changing times, the joy of play remains evergreen, and this movie serves as a delightful reminder of that. In today’s world, where children may be less familiar with traditional games, Gabru Gang aims to reignite their interest. After watching this film, children are bound to be inspired to pick up a kite and experience the sheer exhilaration and fun it brings, prompting them to eagerly request their parents for one.
