Jagjit Singh, the legendary ghazal maestro, has etched his name forever in the annals of Indian music. Recognizing his monumental contribution, the Government of India became the first in the country to release commemorative postal stamps in his memory. Two stamps, featuring different portraits of Jagjit Singh, were issued, valued at Rs 5 and Rs 20 respectively.
The stamps were released by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a solemn ceremony attended by Communication and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal, the Prime Minister’s wife Gursharan Kaur, and Jagjit Singh’s wife, Chitra Singh.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh paid tribute to the legendary singer, saying, “Artists like Jagjit Singh are born once in a blue moon. His soothing ghazals will continue to enchant listeners and inspire generations to come.”
This commemorative release not only celebrates Jagjit Singh’s extraordinary musical journey but also ensures that the memory of his mellifluous voice and timeless ghazals remains alive in the hearts of music lovers across the nation.
