Bollywood came together in mourning on Thursday, November 7, following the passing of veteran interior designer and former actor Zarine Khan, mother of Sussanne Khan and wife of actor-director Sanjay Khan. She was 81 and had been battling age-related health issues for some time. Known for her timeless elegance, creative flair, and warm personality, Zarine was a respected figure in both the film and design industries, leaving behind a legacy that bridged glamour, artistry, and grace.
Her final rites were held at the Juhu crematorium in Mumbai, where family, friends, and members of the film fraternity gathered to pay their last respects. Among those present were Hrithik Roshan, Jaya and Shweta Bachchan, Bobby Deol, Saba Azad, Aly Goni, Jasmin Bhasin, Rakul Preet Singh, and Nargis Fakhri. In a moment that stood out amid the grief, veteran actor Jackie Shroff stepped in to restore order. A video shared online shows the actor, dressed in a simple white kurta-pyjama and cap, asking the photographers to “behave” and maintain decorum. Calm but firm, he was heard saying, “Thoda tameez se, behave karo,” reminding everyone of the dignity such occasions demand. His respectful intervention quickly diffused the commotion and earned him widespread praise on social media, with fans lauding his poise and empathy.
Zarine Khan’s demise marks the end of an era for many in Bollywood. She is survived by her husband Sanjay Khan and their four children—Sussanne Khan, Simone Arora, Farah Ali Khan, and Zayed Khan. Her son-in-law Hrithik Roshan, who shared a close bond with her, was among the first to arrive at the funeral with Saba Azad. Bobby Deol, seen outside the Khan residence, appeared visibly emotional after offering condolences, while Jaya Bachchan and her daughter arrived in understated attire, reflecting the somber mood.
Beyond her familial ties, Zarine was celebrated as one of India’s pioneering interior designers. Before making her mark in design, she appeared in early Hindi films such as Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963) alongside Dev Anand. Her impeccable taste went on to define some of Bollywood’s most iconic homes, influencing generations of designers.
