Kalki forced by Dibakar to hit co-star in SHANGHAI

One has always visualised Kalki Koechlin as this petite, sweet, nice and innocent girl who couldn’t mean harm to anyone. However director Dibakar Banerjee had an altogether different expectation from her when she was signed for his most ambitious film till date, SHANGHAI. Other than changing her entire look and persona for the Emraan Hashmi-Abhay Deol starrer and giving her a part where she is out to take revenge, he also gave her a few scenes where she was required to bring on her violent side.

“There is one such sequence in the film that required Kalki to vent her anger. For that she had to hit her co-actor with some object and that too with some good force. Kalki was really hesitant as she could never imagine her doing that. In fact even when she tried doing that, she just couldn’t bring herself to the job,” informs a crew member.

There were many takes required for the shot and it ultimately ended up turning out to be a hilarious experience. Though Dibakar had thought that this would be a simple shot that would be captured in a single take, Kalki’s reluctance cost the scene some added retakes.

“Kalki just couldn’t bring herself up to hit the man. Even though her co-actor was cool with it and asked Kalki to give her best shot (pun intended), she was worried about accidentally hitting him hard”, the source continues.

Though the scene was eventually canned, Kalki is amused when she looks back at the scene. “I just didn’t want to hit the poor guy but Dibakar was forcing me to hit him harder by thinking about something personal and vent out my anger. The trick worked and ultimately it was worth it.”

One wonders whether her co-star can say the same.
