India’s renowned costume designer and former wife to actor-director Mahesh Manjrekar, Deepa Mehta, has died. Their son, Satya Manjrekar, confirmed the sad news through social media where he mourned his late mother.
Satya posted a emotional message with Deepa’s photo on his Instagram story, “I miss you Mumma ????️.” Friends, fans, and well-wishers quickly joined in with the pouring tribute, recalling Deepa not only as a successful professional but also as a source of inspiration to all.
One of the tributes made by Satya was, “Lost a guiding light today. She was not only a mother; she was an inspiration. Her strength, courage, and passion in starting her saree business empowered so many girls to dream big. She will live on forever in the lives she touched and the ways she broke paths. Prayers and strength to you, Satya.”
The second post shared, “She left footprints on our hearts that can never be washed away. Sending you courage to face the tough times.”
Deepa Mehta and Mahesh Manjrekar were married in 1987 when they met while attending college. The two were together for close to eight years before they parted ways in 1995. The couple had two children — Ashwami Manjrekar and Satya Manjrekar.
Mahesh Manjrekar is a well-known face in Indian film, particularly in Hindi and Marathi films. He was born on 16 August 1958 and started his career in theatre and became successful with films such as Vaastav: The Reality (1999), Astitva (2000), and Wanted (2009). After splitting up with Deepa, Mahesh got married to actress Medha Manjrekar, and they have a daughter, actress Saiee Manjrekar.
Deepa’s death has left behind individuals familiar and close to her with a sense of void.
