Deepika Padukone thrilled fans in 2019 by revealing plans to produce and act in a film version of the Mahabharata retold from the point of view of Draupadi. The film, which was to be helmed by director Nitesh Tiwari, was to have Deepika in the main role, a character she referred to as “the role of a lifetime.” She expressed so much enthusiasm about the film, explaining that although the Mahabharata has for a long time been narrated from the perspective of the male characters, her movie would bring a new and meaningful voice, that of Draupadi.

The Promised Vision and Enthusiasm
Deepika had been very excited about playing Draupadi, describing it as a “thrilling and noble” chance. During various interviews, she described how she was eager to provide a fresh perspective to the Mahabharata’s ageless wisdom, highlighting an aspect that had been underrepresented. The actress highlighted how this reinterpretation would be both engaging and historically relevant. Back then, she had stated that the project was pre-production phase and shooting would start in the next year.

The Project’s Status and No Updates
Since those initial announcements, though, there have been no updates on the film. The project seems to have been shelved, with no word on whether it has been shelved for good. Industry sources have suggested that the film is no longer in the works. The film was to be made by Deepika Padukone and Madhu Mantena, with Hrithik Roshan in the role of Lord Krishna. But nothing has been done, and to date, the movie still hangs in the balance.
Nitesh Tiwari Moves On to Ramayana
In the meantime, director Nitesh Tiwari has gone on to another big project: a Ramayana film starring Ranbir Kapoor as Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita, putting the Draupadi film even further behind him. Deepika, even with the stalled Mahabharata film, managed to do well with other projects such as Chhapaak and 83, and remains to excel in her acting career.
