You are aware that Nanda shared a marvelous relationship with Shashi Kapoor and the two were reported to be the hottest pair of the 60’s. In fact, after the super hit JAB JAB PHOOL KHILEN (1965) the duo did as many as seven films together. However, few are aware that Nanda shared a warm relationship with Shashi Kapoor’s elder brother and actor- filmmaker Raj Kapoor.
Raj Kapoor knew Nanda’s father Master Vinayak very well. When Raj Kapoor was planning BOOT POLISH, Nanda approached him for the role along with her father but Rajji politely declined the role to her. Recalling the incident Nanda in an interview said, ”Rajji affectionately told me that movie is based on the miserable plight of a little girl who along with her elder brother is forced into begging. Hence I am looking for a girl who looks deprived but beta; you are too sweet and affluent.”
Though Raj Kapoor declined Nanda the role but he had high regards for her as an actress. Nanda recalling her relation with Raj Kapoor said, ”Though Rajji rejected me for BOOT POLISH, yet he continued to encourage me and was a driving force when I was passing through desolation in my life.” She added, ”In fact, when I was at the dusk of my career, I met Rajji at my best friend Waheeda Rehman’s house in a party. There Rajji expressed his anguish over my retirement from films and urged to make a comeback. He offered me the role of Chhoti Bahu in his movie PREM ROG. Despite my resistance he compelled me to do the role. When the movie was released I received rave reviews and my career got a new boost.”
