It has been a reasonably good Friday for the industry with Ramesh S. Taurani’s (Tips Films), PHATA POSTER NIKHLA HERO, scoring well at the single screens and the Irrfan-Nawaz starrer, THE LUNCHBOX, embarking on quite a decent start at high end urban ‘A’ multiplexes.

Coming to the details, the Rajkumar Santoshi directed Shahid-Ileana starrer, PPNH, saw a 50 percent start (all India average) with some centers (single screens) of the Hindi belt showing occupancies as high as 75 percent. The multiplexes of metros are much lower but that can be compensated for by the decent performance at North and Central Indian multiplexes. What augers well for PHATA POSTER NIKHLA HERO is the fact that not only it is the best opener of Shahid Kapoor in a long-long time; even the high release size will ensure a good to decent weekend.

The second release of the week, THE LUNCHBOX, is a rare intellectually gratifying film, but most importantly it also has interesting and entertaining moments (like the films of the still in vogue legend, Shyam Benegal), more so due to Nawazuddin’s high class subtle, yet realistic comic timing . As a result, not only are the multiplex audience liking the film, even a section of the much-maligned (for their taste!) masses are enjoying it.
Meanwhile last Friday’s GRAND MASTI has surprised all (including its detractors!) by netting 65 crore plus during the opening week (just as we had predicted). Given the financial logistics, the Indra Kumar directed Vivek, Ritesh and Aftab starrer is a super hit, and still has a lot of fire power left!
