Filmmaker Aanand L Rai has spoken out strongly against an unauthorised AI-altered version of his 2013 cult classic Raanjhanaa, calling the move “devastating” and “deeply upsetting.” The altered version, reportedly released by Eros International, includes a modified ending using artificial intelligence a change made without Rai’s consent or knowledge.
“Not the Film We Made”
Taking to Instagram, Rai shared a behind-the-scenes photo of stars Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor, expressing the emotional distress he and his team have experienced. “To watch Raanjhanaa be altered, repackaged, and re-released without my consent has been nothing short of devastating,” he wrote. “What makes it worse is the ease and casualness with which it’s been done.”
Despite the turmoil, Rai expressed gratitude for the support from fans and the film industry, saying it reminded him of the film’s original values — connection, courage, and truth.
AI Version Called “Disrespectful”
Rai firmly rejected the AI-altered version, stating, “I do not support or endorse it. It is not the film we made.” He added that neither he nor the creative team — including the writer, composer, lyricist, and actors — were consulted.
Calling it a distortion of the film’s soul, he said, “This was shaped by human hands and emotions. The AI version is not a tribute — it’s a betrayal.”
Director Requests Name Be Removed
In protest, Rai has asked the producers to remove his name from the film’s credits. The AI-modified version reportedly replaces Raanjhanaa’s melancholic ending with a “happier note,” a move that has drawn widespread backlash from fans and fellow filmmakers.
