For all fans of the cult film Rangeela, here’s some good news: the 1995 Ram Gopal Varma-directed film is back in theaters on November 28, 2025, after three decades since its release. With Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar, and Jackie Shroff in the lead, the film still holds a special place in many viewers’ hearts as its songs, performances, and relatable characters continue to linger.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, lead actress Urmila Matondkar reflected upon the unique charm which the film possessed and how it captured the audience’s imagination. She expressed her amazement at how people still remember her character’s name even after so many years. “It’s unbelievable how people remember the name of my character. When I’m at the airport, they call me by my character’s name. It comes out from the relatability factor that the characters had in the movie,” she said.
Matondkar even addressed a potential remake and said that she is open to the idea despite the cult status of the film. She explained that cinema belongs to any and all who have experienced it-not just one actor or creator. “The movie doesn’t belong to you anymore. Over the years, I have realized that the film is as much for each and every person who has seen it as it is mine,” she explained. Further, she said, one needn’t obsess over their previous work or roles. She welcomes remakes if they are well-made, saying the judgment of that should be left to the audience.
When reminiscing about working on Rangeela, Matondkar described the memories as a flood of joy and excitement. “Instead of memories, it’s a big flash of happiness, excitement, thrill. Everything just comes to your mind the minute you say Rangeela,” she shared.
Her reflections underline not only the lasting legacy of the film but also the enduring emotional connection audiences continue to have with this 90s masterpiece.
This re-release of Rangeela celebrates a timelessness that reminds fans why this film is one landmark in Bollywood, even 30 years down the line.
