While the promo of AIYYAA had turned out to be quite endearing for most who have seen it ever since its release last weekend, there were some who questioned the film’s so-called ‘racist’ undertone. Since the film’s central character played by Rani made a statement that she liked ‘kaale ladke’ and then the chosen one turned out to be a South Indian (Malayalam superstar Prithviraj), there were some who felt it hinted of racism.

“Puhleeze, it is not said in any terms which are bad. Logon ko kuch naa kuch chahiye uchaalne ke liye. When you see the film in the story’s context, you would realise that there is nothing racist about it,” shoots back Rani.
She feels that too much is being said about something, just because the spoken language is Hindi here.

“When we talk in English, don’t we say that ‘Oh, my ideal guy has to be tall, dark and handsome? Tab toh kaafi sophisticated lagta hai sabko (That time everyone feels very sophisticated). Now in Hindi if we say gora aur kaala then people accuse us of racism,” she continues, “It is not a problem with the language. It is a problem with those people who are perceiving things in the way it suits them.”
She goes on add in a lighter vein, “Don’t go so deep into things. We have read all about the fantasies of tall, dark and handsome in story books and found it to be cool. Since Meenakshi (the Maharashtrian character that she is playing in the film) is not really playing an upper class girl, she will only say ‘kaala’ naa?”
