If things would have stuck to the original plan, Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha may well have missed their chance to be a part of a period affair. As a matter of fact they could well have not been a part of LOOTERA, if not for the changes that started taking place during the film’s conceptualisation.
“It was the story of LOOTERA that came first and then the period element. To begin with, the film was meant to be set in the present. But as the story started developing, director Vikramaditya Motwane started realising that the story’s setting in the modern times wasn’t creating the kind of impact he wanted,” informs a source.

“The chosen era was no way back in the 50s. Since the love story was set in Bengal at a ‘Zamindar’ household, Vikramaditya was able to put together the pieces that went with his vision,” adds the source.
“I wanted certain innocence in the characters and this is where the period element started seeming far more plausible. My love story element wouldn’t have managed to create even half that impact if it was contemporary, the reason being that we are too connected in the modern era and are very cynical in our attitude. The kind of emotional sense that the 1950s brought with was a different world altogether,” says the director.

Though Ranveer was apprehensive to begin with, considering that he has played an ultra-flamboyant personality in his previous films, Sonakshi was tailor-made for the part given her quintessential Indian woman appeal.
“I was sure of Ranveer from the very beginning though and knew that he would be a revelation. As for Sonakshi, she has fit herself into the milieu like a glove,” smiles Vikramaditya.
