Supriya Pathak and Pankaj Kapur are today seen as one of the most loved and respected couples in the film industry. They have been happily married for 38 years, but their love story did not begin easily. In a recent conversation with her daughter Sanah Kapur, Supriya shared how her mother, veteran actress Dina Pathak, was strongly against their relationship in the beginning.
Supriya recalled that her mother did not believe the relationship would last. In fact, she was so unsure that she often said that Pankaj might leave her someday. Even though the couple has now spent decades together, Supriya joked that her mother might still have felt the same way if she were alive.
She also revealed that her mother tried many ways to discourage her from marrying Pankaj. Dina Pathak even tried to find faults in him. At one point, she claimed that he drank a lot, even though in reality he has never consumed alcohol. Supriya shared that her mother would often bring up such points to convince her that he was not the right partner.
This phase went on for quite some time until Supriya finally decided to stand firm. She told her mother clearly that she was going to marry Pankaj on a fixed date, and it was her choice whether she wanted to attend the wedding or not. It was a bold moment where Supriya chose her own path despite family pressure.
In a lighter moment, she also shared a funny memory from that time. Her mother suddenly asked her if she liked paneer. When Supriya said yes, her mother connected it to Pankaj being Punjabi, almost as if that was a deciding factor. It became a humorous yet memorable part of their story.
Over time, things changed. Dina Pathak eventually accepted the relationship and grew very fond of Pankaj. In fact, Supriya said that he later became her mother’s favorite person in the family.
Today, Supriya and Pankaj have built a strong and loving family. They have two children together, Sanah and Ruhaan. Pankaj is also the father of actor Shahid Kapoor from his earlier marriage.
