The rivalry between Jaya Prada and Sridevi dates back to the late 70’s when the duo made their debut in Bollywood. Sridevi made her debut in Bollywood with SOLVA SAWAN (1978), a remake of Tamil hit 16 VAYATHINILE, opposite Amol Palekar. However the movie failed to click at the box office. A year later Jaya Prada made her debut with SARGAM (1979), a remake of Telugu hit SIRI SIRI MUVVA, opposite Rishi Kapoor. The movie proved super hit and Jaya Prada became a star overnight. She also won a Filmfare nomination as Best actress in SARGAM.
The success of Jaya Prada and failure of Sridevi in Bollywood kick started a literal war between the two. Sridevi thus became desperate to make her mark in Bollywood which she ultimately did with HIMMATWALA opposite Jeetendra.
Miffed at Sridevi’s success with HIMMATWALA, it’s reported that Jaya Prada in an interview criticizing Sridevi’s new stunning look in the movie had commented, ”I am beautiful by birth while Sridevi has made her look beautiful through cosmetic surgery!”
The spoof that Jaya Prada made on Sridevi’s nose surgery hurt the latter so intensely that after that she never spoke to Jaya Prada. In fact, the two did many films together but were never on talking terms. Once, Jeetendra tried to sort out their rivalry and locked the duo in a makeup room, hoping they would shed their enmity and become friends but the attempt failed as the two sat opposite to each other without uttering a single word.
Last year, their rivalry had hit headlines when Jaya Prada skipped the birthday bash of Sridevi that was hosted by politician Amar Singh, a close friend of Sridevi’s hubby, Boney Kapoor.
