Two decades after its original release, Parineeta, the acclaimed 2005 romantic drama, is returning to the big screen in a stunning restored version. To celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary, PVR INOX is re-releasing the Vidhu Vinod Chopra production in select theatres across India for one week, starting August 29. The re-release also marks 20 years of Vidya Balan in Indian cinema and 50 years of Vinod Chopra Films.
A Tribute to Classic Cinema
Parineeta, based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1914 Bengali novel, was directed by Pradeep Sarkar and featured Vidya Balan in her debut role alongside Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt. Set against the nostalgic backdrop of old Kolkata, the film was widely praised for its evocative visuals, timeless music by Shantanu Moitra, and its nuanced portrayal of love and class in early 20th-century India.
Speaking about the remastered release, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra said, “Parineeta is more than just a film—it’s a journey of love, elegance, and soulful music. With the 8K restored version, the visuals are richer, and the beauty of old Kolkata shines brighter than ever.”
A Heartfelt Reunion for the Cast
Vidya Balan, reflecting on the re-release, said, “Parineeta is where it all began for me. Every frame carries a piece of my heart. I’m forever grateful to Pradeep da and Mr. Chopra for believing in me. Even today, people remember the songs, the story, and the emotions it stirred.”
Saif Ali Khan called the film a turning point in his career. “It allowed me to explore a more restrained, introspective side of acting. The elegance and charm of Parineeta remain unmatched.”
Sanjay Dutt, who played a pivotal role, added, “This was a beautiful film crafted with honesty. It was my second collaboration with Vidhu Vinod Chopra after Munnabhai MBBS. I’m glad a new generation will experience its magic.”
A Legacy Celebrated
Niharika Bijli, Lead Strategist at PVR INOX, emphasized the importance of reviving cinematic classics: “Today’s audiences crave timeless stories. Parineeta is a jewel in Chopra’s legacy, and we’re thrilled to bring it back in a beautifully restored format.”
With its one-week re-release, Parineeta invites both long-time fans and new viewers to rediscover its old-world charm and artistic brilliance on the big screen once again
