After winning accolades for the middle-of-the-road approach that he has adopted for HAASIL, SHAGIRD and more recently SAHEB, BIWI AUR GANGSTER, Tigmanshu points the success of action genre to the story telling technique that has been adopted by the filmmakers today.
”These films are doing well because youngsters today weren’t exposed to this genre since the death of 70s and 80s cinema,’ he reflects, ‘Jo yeh haamaare time ki picturein thi, woh ab wapas aa rahi hain. For the younger generation, this is something new, something that should work in favour of PAAN SINGH TOMAR as well.”

In the process of doing that, he also decided to do away with the cliches attached to the dacoit movies (that were made in dozens during the 60’s and 70’s) and decided to bring his own take which was a tad realistic.

”If at all there were any references that I carried, it was for sheer nostalgic purpose,’ says Tigmanshu, ‘Since Paan Singh is a real life character, I wanted to be true to the character. I didn’t want to end up making an out and out Chambal dacoit movie.”
However the very fact that the film has been shot in real ‘Chambal Ki Ghaati’ means PAAN SINGH TOMAR brings in good visual appeal which is true to the subject and the content.
”Yes, visually PAAN SINGH TOMAR has indeed turned out to be quite stunning,” he says with a smile, ‘Shooting in Chambal was like shooting in Ladakh. You can place the camera anywhere and a frame will still look good. Chambal has its romantic quotient and ruggedness; it is India’s own Grand Canyon. The whole terrain is bound to give you goose-bumps.”
