The winners of the 71st National Film Awards were announced on August 1, celebrating outstanding contributions to Indian cinema from 2023. In a proud moment for Bollywood, Vikrant Massey and Shah Rukh Khan were jointly awarded Best Actor for their acclaimed performances in 12th Fail and Jawan, respectively.
Vikrant Massey: “A 20-Year-Old Dream Fulfilled”
Reacting to the recognition, Vikrant Massey expressed deep gratitude, calling the award a dream come true. “I want to thank the Honourable Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the NFDC, and the esteemed jury members for considering my performance worthy of this honour,” he said. He credited director Vidhu Vinod Chopra for the opportunity, adding, “Today, if I may say so, a 20-year-old boy’s dream has come true.”
Massey also acknowledged the impact of 12th Fail, which tells the true story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who rose from poverty to become an IPS officer. “I dedicate this award to all marginalised people — those often looked through, and those battling the socio-economic challenges of our country every single day,” he stated.
SRK’s Victory for Jawan
Sharing the spotlight, Shah Rukh Khan earned his first-ever National Film Award for his dual-role performance in Atlee’s blockbuster Jawan. The film sees SRK as Azad, a vigilante jailer, and Vikram Rathore, a former soldier. Tackling corruption and injustice, the film struck a chord with audiences and critics alike.
Featuring a strong cast including Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi, Jawan showcased SRK’s versatility and star power. Vikrant graciously acknowledged his co-winner, saying, “It is a privilege to be sharing my first National Award with an icon like Shah Rukh Khan.”
The awards mark a milestone for both actors — one a rising powerhouse, the other a reigning legend.
